A few rare Qur'ans were produced on dyed parchment, and the museum’s collection includes a page from one of these sumptuous manuscripts, which was copied in gold Kufic on parchment dyed blue (fig. 5). Although papermaking was already known in the early Islamic period, parchment seems to have been preferred for Qur'ans for as long as Kufic script remained in popular use, up to the twelfth century. Not only was Kufic script an ideal partner for the parchment page, but its rectilinear form was also well suited to inscriptions in a variety of media, such as wood, stone, textiles, and ceramics.
How to Make Geometric Art
One particularly notable example in the museum’s collection is a charming glass perfume container in the form of a kneeling quadruped, possibly a camel, whose long, elegant neck serves as the vessel’s spout (fig. 13). Here, in order to transform the animal into a functional vessel, it has been reduced to its most basic yet recognizable forms. The elegant, curved neck of the camel has been further elongated to serve as the vessel's spout, the hump is reconfigured as the handle, and the tiny, almost vestigial feet represent the legs folded beneath the beast.

By the middle Geometric period (850–760 BC), the decorative zones appear multiplied due to the creation of a laced mesh, while the meander dominates and is placed in the most important area, in the metope, which is arranged between the handles. This is custom Zoom background illustration to celebrate and inspire AAPI Heritage Month.

If you want something more complex, including geometric patterns within already existing shapes can be the way to go. The top left and bottom right example on this page are great examples, one using squares to house patterns, the other using circles. These patterns can be created using geometric shapes such as circles, squares, triangles, and hexagons, and often feature a symmetrical or tessellating design. These patterns can be used in a variety of ways, from background textures to foreground graphics.
The revelation of the Qur’an and its subsequent codification in written form had an incalculable impact on the development of Arabic writing and on book production in the first century of the Muslim era. By early Abbasid times the Qur’an had achieved a standard arrangement, which prevailed for several centuries. Following the tradition of classical antiquity and Byzantium, the codex, or book, was adapted as the format for the Qur’an, which is made up of 114 chapters. By the mid-ninth century Abbasid political unity had begun to crumble, and by the tenth century Abbasid authority was effectively limited to Iraq. Elsewhere in the Islamic world a series of dynasties in Egypt, North Africa, Spain, and Iran fostered the development of indigenous styles of Islamic art.
Geometric Art Explorations

Although several styles of writing were practiced in the seventh and eighth centuries, by the ninth century so-called Kufic had supplanted these in the production of Qur'ans. Named after the city al-Kufa, in southern Iraq, this is a remarkably diverse, rectilinear script, written, like all Arabic scripts, from right to left. Early Qur'ans, copied in the Kufic script (fig. 4), were generally written in black or dark brown ink.
Test what you can do with shadows in your own patterns, from making an almost 3D shape, to drawing attention to certain parts of the image. Geometric patterns are a collection of shapes, repeating or altered to create a cohesive design. Here, we’ve listed 40 great examples to help jumpstart your design ideas, with tips on how to apply them.
Isometric patterns—or patterns that appear to be three dimensional—can really make an image pop, if used correctly. Isometric Exhibition offers a great example, using hard colors to create the illusion that the shapes pop off the page. Used sparingly and creatively, this can draw attention to specific items or words. The art of pottery was greatly advanced in the ninth century with the development of the technique of luster painting. Luster painting is a spectacular means of decorating pottery, perhaps in imitation of precious metal, which was first developed in Iraq and subsequently spread to Egypt, Syria, Iran, and Spain.

In order to satisfy that demand Islamic potters in the ninth century began to imitate the whiteness of high-fired porcelain by covering low-fired earthenware with an opaque white glaze of tin oxide. One of the most common types of early Islamicand early medieval textiles is decorated with a long band inscribed with the name and titles of the ruler, as well as the date and place of manufacture. Such inscribed fabrics, of which a number are preserved in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, are known as tiraz, from the Persian word for embroidery.
As you delve into this enchanting realm of design, remember that the possibilities are limitless, and it is the marriage of creativity and precision that unlocks the true magic of geometric art. So, let your imagination soar, and explore the wonders of geometric design in your own artistic endeavors. Other types of early Islamic fabrics were also tapestry-woven, for example, a fragment in the museum’s collection, whose colorful decoration reflects the influence of Sasanian art (fig. 6). This textile dates from the eighth or ninth century and was likely produced in Egypt, where tapestry-weaving had existed since Pharaonic times. Its linen ground bears a silk decorative band of rather ungainly birds, perhaps ducks, each enclosed by a medallion. The medallions alternate with twin pairs of wings, an abstracted version of the Sasanian royal crown motif, discussed above (fig. 1).
In recent years there has been a cultural push to return artworks to their original homes from overseas galleries and institutions (to the applause of the average person). This nascent movement is occurring with African Art, Native Aboriginal Australian art and other countries in which the injustices have occurred. Countries are seeking their culturally significant artwork and artefacts to be returned. Send me exclusive offers, unique gift ideas, and personalized tips for shopping and selling on Etsy.
The nice thing about geometric elements is they are versatile enough to work with almost any design scheme. From small repeating patterns to more abstract geometric options, there are almost limitless possibilities for using this trend. To use it well, you’ll want to make sure every element is created with purpose and intention in relation to the rest of the content and design.
You can use a lot of different styles and shapes to create something completely your own. For example, you can use shapes that create the illusion of a reflection, such as in this case. Combining different shapes, lighting, and colors can produce different effects and illusions, and gives you a lot of material to work with. It also has a classic quality that keeps this style from going out of fashion, because geometric design elements can work with almost anything else. They can be repeating patterns, single or hap-hazardly placed shapes, fonts, or almost any use of circles, squares, triangles, or other shapes. Las Vegas, with a metro area population of nearly 3 million, is one of the largest cities in the country without an art museum.
